Lucky Craft or Lucky Crap??

Went to the lake today for a little fishin' casting practice (water is 40 and muddy) and I had a Pointer 100 DD tied on. I was working over a main lake point with it and about mid-retrieve my phone rings ( >:) )....get done with the call,(<1 min) take a look out in the water and my DD Pointer is on the surface. I immediatley reel it in and give it a good looking at. Nothing wrong. I clipped it off and tied on another one,it floated up too!!!! Clipped that one off and tied another.....same thing. Ended up trying 4 different DD's and all of them floated up.....whats up?  :-?

I've been using the Pointer DD's for a while now and never noticed before that they float up.

Are they a suspending bait?

That's odd to say the least.  I remember something on the package of a Pointer about suspension and water temperature.  If memory serves it was around 55*F.

Since gas contracts at colder temperatures, perhaps there wasn't enough boyancy to keep the bait suspended.

BTW, 40*???.  Can't believe we're warmer down here than you are up there.

Are they a suspending bait?

This is what it says on the Lucky Craft website:

"DD equals Deep Diver" Listen up all you Pointer fans. Lucky Craft now has a new Pointer minnow to add to their repertoire. The new Pointer 100 DD is a deeper diving version of the popular Pointer 100 SP. This new Pointer 100 DD is a great bait for fishing a few feet deeper than the original 100 SP. This bait will dive about 6-7 feet deep and suspend when paused. It has a wider wobble than the Pointer 100 SP and still has the same body style. This bait can be used for a bigger profile bait in lie of the Staysee 90 SP. When the fish are holding out a little deeper this bait will get in their face and aggravate them to strike.

Yeah, but I'm at 2600' above sea level and you're about 800'.  Plus I'm only about 50 miles closer to the equator than you.   :)

I saw 46* in a couple of spots late Wednesday afternoon.  We've had upper 60s the last 3 days, so the water might be up to 47 or 48 by now.  Might have even been that high late last week before we got 2" of rain in less than 24 hours.

I also see now that you are closer to the sun than we are. ;D

I wish it worked like that half the time.   :o

Pointers will definitely float in 40 degree water.  You can only make a bait suspend at a certain water temperature- colder water is denser, and warmer water is less dense.  It would be impossible to make a jerkbait suspend perfectly in any water temp.  Lucky Craft's are designed to suspend in 52 degree water in my experience.  I fished a slender pointer last month right after a pond thawed, and it floated as well...the water was just too dense.  You can add a suspend dot or two if you want it to suspend in water that cold.

I'm not much of an expert on suspending baits, but are the Pointers designed differently than an X-Rap?

I ask because back in January I was fishing an X-Rap in 37* water and it never floated to the surface even on pauses of up to 2 minutes.

Some of the Jackall suspenders actually will (slowly) sink in cold water instead of suspend. I noticed that lucky craft suspenders will float (slow) in cold water. It all depends on the brand and water temp.!

Most suspenders truly suspend around 55. In very warm water the Lucky Craft suspenders will slowly sink.

The water temp is the definitive answer.  The only way to make a bait (or anything else, for that matter) suspend in the water column is to ensure that the density (mass/volume) of the bait matches that of the water.  Since water's density is variable and inversely proportional to its temperature (i.e. lower temp=higher density, higher temp=lower density), no bait will suspend perfectly all the time.  This is why I prefer that my suspenders float in very cold water because I can always add suspendots to fine tune it.  If the bait is sinking, there is nothing that can be done to fix it.

Floating, sinking, suspending - you will get all three out of most "suspending" baits depending on water temp, ie water density.  Also in play are line size and type as well as depth.

I have had days that a bait worked perfectly then a few hours later, I had to add dots to it to keep the same suspending action.

I've had days when Pointers stayed suspended perfectly and my Husky Jerks shot to the surface.

You have to adjust your suspending baits ot the conditions.
