First Dropshot Fish

Recommended Posts

I hit one of my local spots today, determined to become more proficient on three techniques I haven't tried to much and have never had much luck with: the C-rig, dropshot, and regular jig fishing. I did a little topwater for about a half hour early in the morning, had no luck, and then switched off between the "new" stuff (for me anyway).

I successfully fought the urge to fish my normal methods. Other anglers I spoke with on the water weren't having much luck either, so I figured today's a good day to try some new techniques.

Didn't have any luck for several hours, but began to feel a bit more comfortable with all three techniques after a while.

Finally, I got my first dropshot fish. Keep in mind I took the photo from about 20feet away because he was so huge he wouldn't have fit in the camera screen:

OK, just kidding about that last part, but it avoided the skunk. Thank you Roboworm

It's funny that all the methods you mentioned are also not in my usual arsenal. I've caught some jig fish and a couple on a version of the c-rig but never drop shotting.

Nice fish though!

I've never caught a fish on a jig or a drop shot rig but i have a slight suspicion it has something to do with me not ever trying them :D lots of pros here in SA dig it but I don't want to do them if I'm not 100% sure i'm going to catch a big boy on there. maybe if one of my friends tries it and is successful one trip?

since the water temps got above 85 here i have been forcing myself to learn the drop shot technique.

i have had some good luck with it. as a matter of fact i have put more fish in the boat with it than any other rig over the last month.

it seems to catch bass when nothing else will.

Nice job! How far was your bait from the weight and how were you working it?

The worm was probably 18" up from the weight. I just kind of tossed it out the boat, let the sinker hit bottom, kept the line fairly taut to keep the bait suspended where it should be, and lightly twitched the rod tip and inch or two up and down. I'm no dropshot expert, but at least it got me something - and nice to avoid being skunked that day.

Well its nice to know that other people struggle with the same techniques as I do! I just caught my first on the drop shot last week. I've fished several tournys with the FLW college fishing circuit and never used it. In hind sight I should have learned it prior to doing those tournys! Glad you got your first one on the DS! It looks to be about the same size as my first "monster" on that technique!

nice report, been thinking of trying more drop shot except I bank fish 95% of the time and think I'm more successful with other methods.
