Topwater Preferences...devils Horse Or Popper?

Featured Replies

I know either one has its place and time based on conditions, but I also know some prefer one over the other.

For those who have fished both, which do you prefer and why?

I own 1 dying flutter/devils horse and around a dozen Pop R's.

I have a dozen or so Devil Horses. I don't think I have fished one in a decade or more.

Topwater for me is PopMax, Sammy, occasionally a Spook, Megastrike buzzbait, Rage

Shad and the new Menace.

Jitterbug. My #1 topwater bait. I'll catch some on poppers and prop baits, but the ol' trusty J-bug is the go-to topwater.

If I had to carry one style of topwater it would easily be the popper especially for numbers of fish. I've had some occasional success with prop baits but it's not nearly as consistent as the popper. That said a very cool topwater/ jerkbait hybrid prop bait is the Shimano Triple Impact, not an easy bait to find but if your interested check out Ichiban Tackle.

Tough choice!! I use both when conditions are calm and I want a subtle bait. devils horse? yeah i said subtle. theres a lot more to it than ripping it through the water if it is modified right! If I want to rip a bait in waves there are far better choices.

Popper is more versatile IMO. Prop baits are better in choppy conditions though.
