What Is This?

Featured Replies

I was fishing on a lake in Georgia. This lake is made artificially colder than most lakes in Georgia because of Lake lanier dam, you can even catch trout in it (which I often do). The Georgia DNR says pickerel can be caught in the section of the river downstream of the lake, but not in the lake itself. I was pretty sure it was a pickerel when I caught it, but I have had several people tell me its a Pike. Was just wondering the opinions of the members of this forum.

P.S. How do you put photos directly on to your posts without having to use attachments? Pretty sure I see people doing that all the time.

didnt think they made it this far south, unless it was artificially placed in the lake somehow. and I figured out the picture thing

You could check the DNR records to see what has been stocked there. if the lake is artificially colder than what is normally found, it makes sense for them to stock Pike to assist in keeping the baitfish in check.

Thats a Grass or Barred Pickerel. You can tell by the tell tale black line running horizontally through the eye and face. Only way to truly tell if it's a Pike is to see a close up of the gill plate or the mandible pores on the bottom of the jaw.

looks like a chain pickerel to me. we have both up here in pa. got a 29 incher yesterday.

I gladly stand corrected. Sorry for the misinformation.

Oh, they get plenty big, state record here in little 'ol Rhode Island is 6lbs-11oz

A 3 lb Pickerel looks like a torpedo!

Looks like a text book example of a chain pickeral to me too. You can even make out the chain links in it's color pattern in your picture.
