Building A Manual Rod Wrapper

Featured Replies

I'm looking into doing some custom wrapping and thought I'd start out on some of the many rods I already have before I dive into an actual rod build. I ordered a bunch of supplies from an online site, but I don't want to spend the bucks for a prefab wrapper.

Does anyone have a blueprint for making my own? It need not be colapsable, just enough to hold and turn the rod with some sort of slide for the bobbin. It'd be nice if it would be compatible to adding a motor to, but for now, that's another project. Thanks

Just scroll to the top of this page and put "rod wrapper" in the search box. You will find links and info.

A couple of V-blocks with felt glued into the V's, a tea cup to hold the thread, and a phone book to tension the thread - simple but gets the job done. The problem comes when it's time to epoxy the thread wraps. I bought a cheap 6 rpm a/c motor and fashioned a rod chuck out of a piece of PVC pipe with 3 bolts threaded into it to hold the rod handle. Swap the motor assembly for one of your V blocks and you're in business. Total cost, about $30. I've done around 25 rods so far and feel no need to upgrade to more expensive equipment.

If you have not found this yet on rodbuilding.org, here you go...

I built mine based on this design, it is not 100% finished in this photo, still had to add the felt lining, rod tensioners and eyes for the thread...

If you go to ebay and put in rod dryer in the search bar you will find a guy that sells rod dryers for around $30, I bought one and so far its working flawlessly. It comes with a chuck and one stand, he will sell you additional stands if you ask for them. I would suggest at least 1 additional.
