Rage Tail Questions

I have two questions about the rage tail shad:

1. Is it heavy enough to throw on casting gear?

2. Can you reel it as slow as most hard buzzbaits and still get the good surface action?

1.  Yes

2.  Yes

Yeah, no problem at all on casting gear. I use a Daiwa Fuego with 12 lb mono for my Shads, and it's perfect, and yes, they can be worked pretty slow, and still throw a bunch of water. All my buddies are oggling over my buzz baits now (especially the Cavitrons), because I just don't use them anymore now that I've found the Shad. They're more versatile, because you can throw 'em in some slop and not worry about getting hung up.

Definately, you can really launch them with a gammakatsu 5/0 EWG superline hook. If on the retrieve water doesnt splash over and in front of the bait, rerig until it does. Love these things

I think it runs much better w/ a 4/0 ewg.

X2 4/0

Yes and Yes.  I like to use the shad on a fast action medium heavy or heavy action rod with 40 to 65lb braid.  Same for the ragetail toad.  a 4/0 superline ewg works great for both.

These are two of my FAVORITE topwater lures..

Hey Cameron, On the Toad I am partial to 5/0 EWG superline Gamakatsu for slightly better hook up percentages. But if you're likin' the 4/0....git'r'dun Here's a link for the Toad rigging too

you can't run it too slow , a medium slow retrieve is required to get the action going on these things , for deep grass flats i like them , but for the shallow places , i choose to go with a frog ...  :)

Thanks guys. I usually use frogs for really sloppy areas with tons of hard weeds, and will be using the rage tail for more open areas or more sparse vegitation that's still too weedy for a buzzbait.

It was explained to me that the little bit of extra depth with a 5 ewg will give the toad and the shad more room to get out of the way, so to speak, on the hook set.

Yes and yes.

Give it a try. You won't look back. I haven't.

Try 50lb. Braid. You should be able to sling it pretty far and still be able to hook and handle the bites you will get.
