Need Help, New Combo

Recommended Posts

I want to get a new casting combo for under $300. I was looking at the speeds spool an TW for $99, and everyone was saying that they liked it. I don't know if I like right or left handed casting reels yet. I only have 2 which are right handed reels(Hold with my left hand), would I still be able to cast with my right hand if I were to get a left handed reel? Should I get one just to try it out? Holding it with my left hand just feels weird, that's why I am thinking of getting a left handed reel. Any input would be great. Thank's.

If you want one rod do do both, I would go with a m/f

I think a MH rod/reel combo is an all-around combo in many eyes. But for me, I'll agree with BassHunter that a M will fit the bill just fine. And if you go with a St. Croix, you'll find that a M/Fast rod is more a MH.

At under $300 you should be able to find a really good rod/reel combo that fits you to at "T". If you can get to a Bass Pro, or other outfitter, ask to try out particular reels on rods you fancy. That way you'll get the feel of the combo and can rule out stuff you thought might be good, but ended up too heavy, light, etc.

Go on TW, and check out there baitcasting rods on sale, they have some good stuff. Hit ebay, you can get a lews tourney pro for like $150. Should be able to get a nice combo in the $300 range.

I think I want to get a St.Croix Medium Lite Mojo 6'9" spinning rod with a shimano symetre. What size of that reel should I get? Are those two good for weightless and weighted worms?

I'm not so sure you know the difference between spinning and casting...... I'm not being as wise guy, but a shimano symetre is a spinning reel, and you asked about a casting combo...... Are you looking for spinning or casting gear?

Get whatever casting reel matches your spinning outfits. Aka if you retrieve a spinning out fit with your left hand get a left hand retrieve casting reel. Its just easier that way an you don't have to worry about it feelin uncomfortable.

I would get the 6'8" Medium/extra-fast Mojo, for those techniques, I have that rod and use it in similar fashion, and it's just right IMHO. The 6/8 M/XF is more of an "all purpose rod" than the 6'9" ML/XF. The Symetre is a great reel, the 2500 size is what I would get.

I know the difference between casting and spinning. I changed my mind on getting a casting combo.

Forgot to say that would also be perfect for worms and small lures. I would be careful going Mojo series all the ones I've seen have micro guides which is something to think about regarding what kind of line you throw. Everyone loves the Mojos from what I see around the threads but then again they may fit they're needs better than ours.

Sorry for flip-flopping around on what reel I want. I decided that I want a left handed reel(casting). I was reading about how alot of people liked the lew's reels, so which one would be best for weightless worms? I thought that I might like the Lew's Tournament MG Casting reel 7:1:1. I was thinking of pairing it with a Duckett Micro Split Grip 7' Medium. Would that be a good combo?
