When tying on a carolina rig, is a tungsten weight a must or can I use a lead egg sinker?

I prefer this type ,it slides through cover and won't get hung as much. I don't use tungsten for CR.

You can use any kind of sliding sinker that you wish. However, you will find that cylindrical or torpedo shapes work better than the egg shape in most applications.

i use a bullet ,bead, swivel then floro leader ,but if i want the bait to float more i use a thicker mono if line sight isnt important

I prefer brass bullet weights for their sound quality. I tie in this order; brass weight, red glass bead, green glass bead, red plastic bead, swivel.  I feel that the plastic bead next to the swivel offers better protection for the knot than having a glass bead there due to the softer composition of plastic compared to glass. The brass weight and two glass beads really make a percussive clacking and offer color variation and light reflection from the brass.

Yes, you can use an egg weight. I prefer a bullet weight, but have used egg weights many times. Good luck.

Flat bottom with some grass will not be a problem for the egg weight.

Rocks, stumps, brush and any other structure can cause the egg weight to hang up.

However, I use a lead egg weight and a tungsten bullet weight and have lost both in the structure so I really think it boils down to personal preference.

Just remember that you get better feed back with the tungsten weight than a lead weight.

And while we are on the subject, please note the guys posts that say to use real glass beads.  Not plastic, but glass.  You get a good sound off glass than you do off plastic. 

You can use either one, but tungsten will be a lot more sensitive than lead.  Thats way I use tungsten all the time.
