Any Tips For Fishing Small Quarry Lakes In Winter?

Featured Replies

I fish mostly these small, deep quarry lakes north of where I live in Philly. Theyre very deep, clear water. The one lake is about 2 acres and has a lot of rock and broken up concrete along the shoreline. The other is about 4 acres and has very little shoreline cover. But theyre both really deep. The shore goes out about 10 feet and then just drops into darkness. I never fished them in the cold winter months so Im just looking for tips and ideas. Im fishing from shore too.

Just an idea, you might try a float and fly, like some guys use for small mouth fishing in the winter. Most guys don't have a float and fly rig just lying around, so at the very least that is a reason to get another rig.

My grandfather uses them. He usually does pretty good when we fish. He mostly targets panfish with them but catches bass and catfish too. Ill check them out, thanks.

Suspending jerkbaits along that drop will work. I fish some strip pits with steep drops along the shoreline and it works in those. They sit right on that lip because they can move up and down in the water very quickly, the more aggressive fish will be right along the edge and those are the fish that are easiest to catch during the winter. Try casting up onto the lip and pulling it out to deep water, parallel to the drop, and if you can get onto it cast out to deeper water and pull the bait back into the shallower water.
