Citica Question

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, today I picked up a new Shimano Citica G, and I was just wondering one thing. The reel seems and feels awesome, however, when I spin the handle and let go, the handle doesn't spin for a long time. Is this me just being OCD?

loosen the spool tension knob and it will spin more freely.

There may be too much grease packed in from the factory or you just need to loosen your spool tension knob.

Loosen the cast control until you get a slight wiggle in the spool, then tighten it

back down just to where there is no play. That is where you will get maximum spin.

Also, even though the reel is brand spanking new, a thorough cleaning and lube

will probably improve the overall performance. Manufacturers tend to over lube

new reels.

When you say handle I assume you mean "handle", not spool. The Citica has an anti reverse pawl as well as the IAR bearing, at least my Citica E does, not sure about the G model. That pawl causes some drag and the handle won't spin as long as reels without this feature.

Not every reel is going to do this. If you get a reel with 12 bearings, its going to spin alot more with less effort. Does this make much of a difference once the load of the lure and line are put on it? No. If thats a selling point to you, than be it. Do yourself a favor, fish the reel for a while, break it in before you start worrying about the little things. Once you have made a few houndred casts with it, then you can have it professionally cleaned and lubed, and you will see a big difference.

I also hear a very faint noise when I reel in (It is very small). I haven't fished or cast with it yet, does it just need to be broken in?

Probably needs to be tossed in the trash.

Just yesterday you were making suggestions on which reels to buy, now you can't even decide if you like the one you just bought and you haven't even used it yet.

It is best to remove the spool bearings from a new reel, soak them in lighter fluid for awhile to remove the manufacturers oil, dry them well and apply a tiny drop of quality reel oil (I use Yellow Rocket Fuel) and you are good to go. Don't worry about the handle spinning, depress the thumb bar then spin your spool with your finger and you will get an idea of how well it spins. You can have 20 bearing in your reel, but the spool will only have 2 and in some reels 3 bearings. Shimano reels have never been big on more than maybe 6 bearings, and that includes the pinion bearing, which has nothing to do with how fast a spool spins. Remember that reels with a high bearing count usually includes 4 in the handles.

If the sound is not mechanical (ie clicking or grinding) its probably normal. Considering the amount of experience you have, I suggest spooling it with line and go fishing.

No problems, I spooled it up, started casting, and it's a great reel. Thanks
