OK so I'm having trouble with my split shot breaking off right at the sinker ...I'm using Berkley 100% floro in 10 to 14 pound test ...So i don't think that is the problem ....i check my line often for nicks and fraying ...and its not the problem ..it breaking off and I'm getting the sinker back just nothing else ....its breaking off right behind the sinker on the lure side. Any one else having this problem or is it just me ?????

Tin shot can be problematic.  Lead is a bit softer.

Seen it a hundred times-by split shotting you are crimping the split shot to the line-therfore causing a nick or crimp in the line -it weakens the line and as soon as you set the hook -CYA ---Put a rubber tubing bushing up the line-like the one that is the rubberband part of a skirt-Then crimp down the split shot over that-It will act as a shock absorber and life is good again

I have never had this happen to me personally, but I would agree lead is softer

You may not see any knicks, but fluorocarbon doesn't like to be pinched, kinked or bent sharply. It damages it internally. Bobby's sol'n is a good one. Another is to first pinch your shot on near the end of your line and then run it back and forth a few times to establish a little groove, then slowly move it up your line to position, cut off the end that you used to wear the groove and then tie on your hook. One last option is to go to a mojo setup with the rubber peg and cylindrical sinker.

NY has long since banned the sale of lead split shot, so most of what you see up here is tin or steel shot.  We've had zero issues using lead shot on fluorocarbon leaders down to 4# size, catching fish in the mid teens.  I don't see why this would be a problem using lead with the much larger diameters.  Tin or steel shot, however is a problem.

I think i am going to go to the Mojo style weights and that should deffentally solve the issues . Thanks for all the help everyone ..

Good tip. I bet heat shrink tubing for electrical connections would work too, although I've never tried it.

Go to a mojo type rig you won't regret it, less hangups and easier on your line

I use a 1/8 or 1/16 worm weight, and a rubber band tied in a double overhand knot. Like a c-rig without the beads and swivel. the rubber band gripa the line and keeps the weight off the bait.
