Best Snaps For Crankbaits?

Featured Replies

Ok, in my previous thread, I asked if snaps on cranks was a good idea. It was a resounding YES! Next questions:

What type of snaps do you use? What brand? What size? Do you leave the split ring on, or take it off?

I haven't found a brand or duo-snaps that didn't work better then the other. They all seem to be about the same. I use the smallest ones I can find. With or without the split ring really doesn't matter to me.

X2

i attach it to the split ring.

if ur going to use the rings....i read about a guys preference for oval over circular rings. with oval rings the line/knot will always sit in the ends where the ring has a double wire wrap.  the double strands of wire putting less stress ie cut on the line.  he noted if using circular to make sure to tie ur line opposite of the single wire/split opening.  good advice but the knot seems to always work itself back around to the place of least resistance ie split opening.  i like the red eye shad b/c it comes with the oval. i wish i never read the article b/c i've become hyper aware of where the knot sits on circle rings ever since.  i didn't change out my rings and I don't think i've ever lost a fish b/c of circle...but if i was going to the trouble to switch them out, or build a stronger system, i would choose oval.

I've always used duolocks in the smallest size, size 1, about 1/2" and rated at 20#. I've used numerous brands and I'd have to say that the best brand of those I've used is Arkie.

I leave split rings on the lure.

I buy them off Ebay in lots of 50 or 100, duolock style and never had a failure.  I put them on the lure exactly how the lure came out of the package, split ring or not.  I use 3/4" for my bass and light saltwater, also 1" and 1 1/4" sizes for some of my other species.  The larger size just may help in not getting cut off from a toothy critter, can't swear to it, but it has never curtailed the bite.
