Hook To Lure Size ?

Featured Replies

What types of lures, like plastic worms? Or hardbaits?

That one is sort of personal preference, with some basics. Also to depends on the bait's thickness or width and cover, especially thick grasses. Surprised no one posted some general rules. Some people use different size hooks for the same baits too. For something like a 10inch ribbontail, go with a 5/0 hook --heavier gauge hook for heavier line/cover. A senko gets a 3- 4/0 hook in my book, most toads get a 5/0 heavier gauged hook.

Yeah, my preference is usually EWG for all those baits %90 of the time. I'm always fishing around a lot of grass so the wide gap provides more room in case you gather up a little grass along with a fish. Hopefully people chime in if they have other opinions on hooks to baits.

I use the biggest hook I can without impeding the action of the bait.

you can also change your rate of sink by your hook diameter lighter wire hook slower sink heavier wire hook faster sink

I also tend to use lighter wire hooks in open water since I won't be needing to horse the fish out of any immediate cover.  If I'm swimming a bait in and around grass, it's always a heavy wire hook.
