Looking At A New Dobyns Spinning Rod.. Need Advice

Featured Replies

Looking at getting a new spinning rod and having trouble deciding which to get between the 702 and 703. My main uses for a spinning rod are trick worms, shaky heads, wacky worms, and sometimes soft jerkbaits. I was leaning towards the 702 but not sure. I'm coming from a 6'6" M. I also thought about the 683?? Oh decisions, decisions!

Assuming most of the weights you will be using are between 1/8 - 1/4 and fishing open water to light cover I would think the 702 would be the rod. However if you think you will be having to turn fish away from cover quickly and fishing 3/16 oz + baits the 703 would be the way to go. What rod line of dobyns were you looking at specifically? Unless it is a champion or champion extreme you may want to get a powell endurance or a St. Croix avid. To me the savy series is solid but not the best rod line for finesse spinning techniques. Wait for a spring sale and you can get an even better deal.

Thanks for the info.. I am looking at the Champion series.

I have a champion 763 and it's a great rod. It's not the same as what you're looking at but I think it's a good compromise power...it can handle the mid/small plastics ok and can still toss a 5" senko if need be.

I use my champion 682, which is for sale BTW, and it covers all those techniques great. Id step up to a 3 power if your throwing anything heavier though...

I have a champ 702 and its amazing for drop shot, finesse jigs, tubes, gitzits, shaky heads and light Texas rigs as well as split shot

I have the Champion 703 and use it for tubes, hula grubs, shaky heads and skippin tubes under docks. The 702 is just on the light side for me except for the drop shot. I run 3/16 to 3/8 with the 3 power regularly. The 703 will turn bigger fish and have the power to set the hook with flukes and such.

If the champion series fishes similar in power to the champion extreme series. The 742 version in the champion extreme fishes heavier than the 702 and could be a good middle ground between the 702 and 703 if you enjoy fishing with a longer rod and have the room for it.
