I am a beginner bass fishermna from ohio.I will be mostly fishing the Ohio River for bass small mouth and large mouth with a few hybrids threw in.Im lookign for lures that I will have a great chance at catching some fish this year.

As of right now I got

3 zara spooks

3 rebel pop -rs

1 black jitterbug

2 packs of zoom lil critter craw

1 pack of zoom pearl white super fuke

1 pack of zoom brush hogs

1 pack of zoom lizards

that is all I have at the moment and would really love some more idead that you all would think woudl catch some fish for me without breakign the bank i just cannot afford 20 buck lures know what i mean.

I have included a photo so you ca nsee what the Ohio River looks liek usally pretty brown stained looking if that helps.

I don't know anything about river fishing. But you've listed just two categories of lures, topwaters and soft plastics. To increase versatility, you might want to add a couple of spinnerbaits, crankbaits and maybe some jigs. Good luck.

what brand spinner baits crank baits and jigs do you reccomend? and what colro should I look for?

You need to get some hollow body frogs,there is nothing better than a bass attacking it on top

Hey, just thought I would put my two cents in and hopefully help. If your going to be fishing the river, I would def get crawfish themed baits. If the water is really stained or muddy go with dark colors like black or black/blue or a very bright color like firetiger. You will want to have some white, green pumpkin and a white/chartreuse for the clearer areas of water. Those colors will get you by, but what you want to do is research what type of crawfish are in the river and try to imitate there colors as well. You don't need to break the bank onthe real expensive baits...get yourself some shallow running crankbaits(2-4ft) a few medium diving cranks (4-8ft) and a few deep diving cranks (8+) just get 3 different colors of each depth so you are prepared for any depth/water clarity situation. Expect to spend 5-6 dollars, but I like the strike king products because there good baits at a reasonable price....then just take these colors and just get different types of baits like spinner baits, vibrating and swim jigs, and some rat-l-traps, otherwise known as lipless crankbaits. Buy what you can afford, because its not the price of the bait that catches fish, its the angler behind it...I would suggest using one type of bait until you feel comfortable with it, then try another. The more confident you are with a bait, the more fish you will catch with it...hope this helps

I fish the Ohio river here where I live and I catch bass on Roostertails. Sizes 1/8, 1/6, 1/4, and 3/8. They're all productive but my favorites are the heavier ones for distance casting from shore and to help sink in the current here. I fish below a dam where the current can be swift but I also fish a lot of the river above the dam where there isn't much current at all and I still usually throw a 1/4 oz then, too. Colors are firetiger, white of any kind, and chartreuse. I'm sure others work too, but those are my best. Also, some lipless crankbaits are needed too. Various colors, silver, chrome, chartreuse, white.

Where are you on the River? 

I fished the Ohio river using a 1/2oz chatterbait in blue/black and did quite well last summer. Otherwise, you've got a good start. Spinnerbaits are something else to consider. There are good ones for $3 and $4 by Booyah & Strike King.
