Fishing With Kids/newbies

Featured Replies

The only people I fish with are my little siblings or family that never fished. What lures/baits should I setup for them. Nothing that cost $10 or is a pain to mess with. What about line choice as well.i don't want line that need to be changed after every outing or is crazy exspensive as well.. Thanks!

How old are they? Unless you're trying to actually teach them how to fish, I'd say some decent mono line, a bobber, snells, and some worms.

I like to teach kids on moving baits that float, or rise to the surface. Poppers, minnow baits, and divers are good starters. Later, when they get used to the strike, you can teach them the hookset, using a lightly weighted soft plastic worm.

I have two 7 year olds I take as well as a 9 year old. I'm trying to teach them how to fish as well to enjoy the sport. What are some sure fire baits or lures?

My 6 yr old uses rooster tails, small crank with no problem, pre-rigged creme worms, beetle spins work too. If your targeting pan fish berkley crappie nibbles or live worms work well.

I second what J franco said also, but my son has a little trouble with the poppers.

When I was that age, all I fished was either nightcrawlers with a bobber or small ball-head jigs with a little grub.  But then my dad never really got into buying all kinds of different lures.  Ill second roostertails or some sort of crankbait since the fish usually hook themselves pretty good.  Also, you can't argue with the fish catching power of senkos and other stickbaits.

I have trouble teaching them techniques which is a pain.

I always give beginners a little 2" chartreuse grub on a 1/16 oz jig head with my ultra light. Or I will put on a senko if there are more than one.

I have a little brother that's nine and loves spinnerbaits and senkos.
