1 Piece Vs 2 Piece

Featured Replies

Have a friend buying his 1st real bass spinning rod. Cabela's has a closeout going on their Eagle II. His choice is a MF - 6' solid or a 2 piece MHF in either 6'-6" or 7'. I think the 2pc. 7 footer would be best - Opinions???

It may partly depend on how the rods are transported to/from fishing site. When I was packing stuff in my car and walking through woods, it had to be a 2 piece setup. Rods that stay on the boat are all 1 piece, since there is no need to break them down.

The 6' seems a tad short for an all-around rod. Hey, why not buy both :eyebrows: !

Generally, one-piece are considered superior to two. However, a good two-piece should not cause any problems for the typical fisherman. I've used them and the only problem was the pieces starting to come apart if I wasn't alert enough to check them at the start of an outing.

A long time ago I ordered a BPS spinning rod for $49. They were out of stock I guess, so they sent me a 2 piece St Croix Premiere 6'6" instead for the same price. That was 12 years ago and the rod is still awesome today.

When I get a 2 piece rod it's because I just happen to like the rod, not for it being 2 piece, but just for the rod. I jam the pieces together so tightly it essentially becomes a one piece since it takes 2 people playing tug of war to ever get it apart again. After that it fishes like a one piece and never flies apart on a cast.

IMO it depends if he mainly fishes from the bank or a boat. But from my experience I'd go with a 2 piece first. That way it will be more convenient even if he fishes from the bank. I have 2 2 piece rods for when I fish from the bank(which is most of the time) and i never have any problems with the second piece flying off.

Many years ago I was strictly a one piece advocate, but like everything else on a rod, the ferrules have improved over the years. With quality rods, I don't mind using 2 piece rods anymore.

If I had a choice between a one piece 6 ft rod or a 2 piece 7 ft rod, I would take the longer rod. Too many advantages in terms of casting and leverage with that longer rod.
