Micro Crankbaits

Featured Replies

I'm not much of a crankbait fisherman, but I have some bomber square a's that I know don't dive real deep. Can I throw these on 14 lb fluro? Will it make these dive deeper? Will I still catch fish If I don't bounce it off the bottom?

When I get down to the really small cranks I like to fish them on spinning gear. I use spinning gear for 0.5 Lucky Crafts, KVD 1.0, #5 shad raps, and similar baits. You can fish them on casting gear, it's just easier to do with spinning gear.

I'm not sure how much added depth the line will give you but whenever I wanna fish a little deeper, I just hold my rod tip lower.  As for catching fish without banging off the bottom, I don't think you should have a problem.  Banging off of cover/bottom can definitely help but on the lake I fish for the most part, the only cover is thick weeds along the shores.  Trying to deflect off of a clump of weeds = snagged/lost crankbait so I just burn them along the edge of the weed lines.  Did really well last fall when the crankbait bite was hot.

I'd use lighter line (6-10lbs).

As, said above...you don't need to deflect the lure off anything. It can help but its not a necessity. Just fish close to cover and try to give it some twitches with your rod tip on occasion to trigger some reaction strikes.

If your dead set on getting those particular lures deeper, you can get some tungsten putty to stick to the bottom of bait.

I use spin gear for any crank under 1/4 ounce or for balsa cranks of 1/4 of an ounce.

For the time and money you'll spend on getting it to do something it's not designed for you can buy a deep diver crankbait for $3-5. Bomber, matzuo, norman, bandit, just to name a few

Deeper than what? The smaller the line diameter the greater the diving depth.

I guess I learned something today. Haha
