Treble Hooks? Red Eye Shad

Featured Replies

I know on the RES that the treble hooks are not exactly the best on the market IMO. I have had several break off and become bi-hooks. So I switched to BPS hooks in their assortment pack for around $5 so it was a good deal. But they aren't much better.

So what hooks do y'all step up to? I saw in this issue of Bassmaster Mag. that KVD steps up to No. 2 Mustad short shanks.

What do y'all recommend? I want to get something that is sharp yet strong for these pesty Hybrid Striped Bass that are straightening out some of my hooks  >:(

Thanks

I replace all questionable treble hooks with Owner Stinger ST-41. They are the best treble on the market. Also i use the same size that came with the bait. Usually on cranbaits is #4 or #6.

I took KVD's advice and got the Mustad triple grip (that he designed) in size 2. The RES probably sinks a little faster but doesn't hurt the vibration any that I can tell. It seems to be a very strong hook. I don't think the ones I got have the short shank which means they tangle every now and again. No more than others I've tried.

I recently replaced the hooks on my 1/4oz RES with one size larger Excalibur trebles.  So far so good.

Every crankbait in my box has Mustad Triple Grips on them, in my opinion the best, most reliable trebles on the market.

What that guy said. Atleast I have Triple Grips on all my rattlebaits and topwaters. They hook and hold fish like no other treble hook out there. I like to use the KVD Short Shank on my rattlebaits... and the reg. ones on my topwaters.

Well I went with the Owner's for now, because they were sold out of Triple Grips  >:(
