Reel Problem

Featured Replies

Caught a fish this weekend and as i was reeling her in the handle would turn but the spool would not. It was a small fish and the spool would turn periodically but would be a serious problem with a bigger fish.

Not sure what the issue could be and any help would be appreciated

Is it a baitcaster? If so its more than likely your drag being way too loose if the reel wasnt making grinding noises

Try tightening your drag down. It may have gotten bumped and come loose.

If that doesn't work, time for a repair trip or return.

Did you land the fish?

Yes its a baitcaster. I landed the fish mainly because he hit close to the bank and i kinda walked him to shore. I had to leave after the catch and will go out today to see if the drag was the problem.

Braid?

are you using braid without a backing to preventing it from slipping on the spool?

You don't need to go fishing to test the drag. Grab the line and give it a tug. Make adjustments as necessary. Also as others have stated if you have braided line without some kind of backing it will slip on the spool.

Tip for the future. When spooling up, most spools are wiffled so instead of tying around the spool, tie the line through the holes in the spool. Impossible for any slipping to occur then
