hey guys, i know theres been alot of talk lately but need some pointers. ive been looking for a swimbait or two to use in the upcoming season. here in N. Illinois, S.WI , i dont get to fish waters day in and day out with monster bass so im looking for the happy medium for a swimbait, something to still pick up the the 2&3 lbers.. but also shoot for a 4 and sometimes 5lber.

Little fish eat big stuff.   Big fish also eat little stuff.  The point is, the size of the bait is not always a predictor of the fish size.

Mattlures is by far the best maker of swimbaits IMO. They are incredibly life-like and the action on them is amazing! They look just like the real thing under water. I have only used one of his lures, the Mattlures Baby Bass, it's 5in in length and weighs 1.5 oz. It can catch big fish but will also get the 3 and 4 lbers as well. I caught a 4.5lb bass on it. You should check his swimbaits out. You won't be disappointed.

try the 6" huddleston , they also have a weedless version . Mattlures also has some great bluegill baits in soft plastic and hard jointed versions . also look into Osprey soft plastic swimbaits in 6" and 7" sizes . you will get bit on these baits and you will attract bigger fish .......... 

I just started tossing the 6" & 8" Huddleston's for smallies! Will let you know.

However, it's my belief that you increase your chances getting a bigger fish with a bigger bait..sometimes..I would try a 6" Hudd, a 5" Mattlures gill, or his shad baits.

Also look at the bbz 6" hard baits.. And  don't forget to make sure your rod is rated for the weights of those baits..

buy quality. Guys who start cheap ususly give up or end up upgrading baits. They would have been better of to buy a couple good baits then a bunch of cheap ones that will end up not getting used.

don't be hesitant to go with the bigger baits , they WILL catch you fish 

around here theres alot of places where wedont have shad as the forage, and definitely not trout, so in that case what would you throw the 6'' hudd in then? if you dont know.. Im literally at the tw checkout tryin to pick a color  :-?

I've fished a lot of lures that didn't look like any kind of forage in the water. Take a spinnerbait for instance. What the heck does that "look" like!

Toss a Hudd or a Mattlure or whatever; trout or perch or shad pattern. Doesn't matter. Any one of them are true quality baits. What does matter is the depth and speed control and where you are presenting it.

If one of these natural looking, subtle swimbaits comes close to a big bass, it almost has to take a swipe at it. It's the nature of the beast. JMO.

Have any of you done this before?

For those of you who have.. Does the top of the hudd get torn up to much when u stick the shank of the  hook in the hud and then land a couple fish?
