Powell Max Question

Featured Replies

I'm in need of a new frog rod and I'm really considering a 734 max. I'm aware they make a specific frog rod, but I really think I'd like the 734 better. My question is related to the power of the rod. I have a 723 endurance and I'd say it's a touch lighter in power in relation to a true mh. So I'm wondering if the 734 has the power to move fish from heavy vegitation. My instincts are telling me it will be. My friend uses a 7'3 heavy bucoo and it seems to be a little under powered compared to most heavy power rods, but still has plenty for getting fish in the boat. So if the power of the 734 is similar in power I'm sure I'll like it. Any input would be great, thanks.

I know this isn't technically what you asked but I frog fish a lot and I've been using a Powell Max 735C for some years now. Here in Alabama 95% of my frog fishing is around fairly heavy grass and the 735 does a great job of getting their heads up and them coming the right direction. It was my first Powell rod and it's still my favorite to this day, it resulted in my picking up 4 additional Powell Max rods. It does a really good job casting 99% of the baits I want it to, such as Gambler Cane Toads, Strike King Rage Toads, Spro Bronzeye 65's, and Bronzeye Jr's. It's also a great rod for pitching jigs, paddletail swimbaits, swim jigs, and medium duty flipping.

Just to be clear I have never fish the 734 that you're specifically asking about, my friend has the 733 and I have the 703 and 706CB but no 4 powers. I'm sure it will do just fine as long as you aren't fishing mats or thick grass. I just wanted to say that the 735 is a great frog rod for the money but it has other uses as well, it isn't limited to just frogs. If you're really serious about throwing frogs you may want to reconsider it. I hope this helps you, I'm sorry I didn't have any real info for you on the 734.

I have a 734C and I think that rod would be fine for frogging. Maybe better than the Max frog rod, actually. I've not used the frog rod, but it's a little too tip heavy for me. The 734C with a reel on it is pretty nice. Very good backbone and nice tip.

I think a 7'3" rod is too long. I do own a 734 and if you like a longer stick, you'll love that one as a toad stick. I use mine for pitching and football jigs. However, my dedicated frog rod is a 714 Endurance. A little play in the tip, the rest is all balls. I have a high strike/catch ratio. Also, shorter rod is better for SKIPPING, something you may want to learn.... I'd buy the Max 7' Mag Heavy for a frog rod... Better suites for the task, if you ask me.

The 734 is a 4 power while the 723 is a 3.  You will notice that the 734 is stiffer with more backbone.  The 735 is a 5 power mag-heavy and is what I use.  I have a 4 power in the 684 CEF rod which I don't think Powell makes anymore, but it has a fairly stiff action as well.  I think the 734 has enough "oomph" to handle the fish while frogging.

I've been using a 7 footer and I've decided to go with a little longer rod, as most of my frogging is long casts over pad fields, weed flats, etc. I do skip when the situation calls for it and I don't think it will be a problem, I can with my flipping stick fine and it's 7'6. From what I'm reading here I'll probably pull the trigger on the 734. Being in Maine a "big one" frogging here is in the 4-5 pound range, so I don't think I need a rod with as much power as the 735. I'm sure it would be a good rod for frogging, but any weight and/or tip heaviness I can avoid by dropping down to the 734 would be nice. I did all my frogging with a mh last year so I think a 4 power should do just fine.
