BBZ shad

Featured Replies

I have been using the 4" bbz floating shad and getting a lot of action but also missing quite a few. Was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. It sucks it only has one treble hook. Does anybody think by modifying it by adding a second treble hook more towards the tail, mess up the action?

it would almost certainly mess up the action.

go with the slow sinking model BBZ shad.  That one is more versatile in my opinion.  Also, the single hook is good enough for fishing.

It will definitely mess the action up. Fish it early in the morning or night time.

You are most likely missing fish due to your hook set and rod position. Keep your rod tip down and rather than swinging hard, try reeling down loading the rod up with a sweep to the side. See if that does not help. And sometimes your just going to miss fish especially small ones.

No, I have the exact same problem.  Im not "missing" the fish, the fish is missing the bait, or at least the hook.  I doubt it would mess the action up horribly, being as there are upteenmillion swimbaits with rear hooks.  But someone mentioned to me on here that possibly the joints on it would not be made to withstand the force a fish would put on the rear sections of the bait - which is a good point.   I love the BBZ 1 action but spite it for its hook.

I've had much better hook up ratios on my trutungsten 4 inch (except the stock hooks sucked and I replaced them with bigger gammies).  But I feel the spro has better action and the trutungsten's finish Im pretty sure is nail polish.. lasts about umm 3 fish.

if you add a second hook to the rear segment, not only will it completely kill the action (the bait is designed and weighted to function with just the front hook, if you add a hook to the tail this added weight will prevent the tail from swinging like it is meant to) but  like tommy bass said it will also add stress to the joints which could very well break them.

if you must add a second hook, try buying one of those tiny neodymium magnets and super glue that onto the end of the third segment. then take a length of 50lb braid and tie it to the front hook hanger, and tie the other end to another treble hook. stick this treble hook on the rear magnet.

the added weight to the rear will most likely kill the action so you may find you want to remove it all, but at least it won't kill the bait like adding a second hook hanger will.

I have never had a problem with hookups on the floater. Unless the fish were just swapping at it. Than its time to either change baits or retrieve.

Also, you might try, while retreiving, go as slow as possible, then give the rod a twitch, you can make that bait do a 180 degree turn, crank a couple times, then stop. This will trigger a solid strike most times, you can vary the twitches and pauses.

No hook needed.

Ya know Bill S. designed the bait with one hook for a reason. If the fish are serious I've had no problems hookin' up.  Good lord, I got a couple of 1.5 lbr's the other day on the 6" jr.

My only complaint is the helicopter business on the cast.  The shad is worse then the jr.
