Wire For Jigs

Featured Replies

I started making my own jigs last year. I hand tie with thread. What are the advantages of using wire? What kind of wire? Best way to tie with wire?

Thanks

I used to tie with thread as well. If you are going to tie hair jigs then thread is the only way to go as it holds hair much better than anything else. If you want to tie silicone skirts on bass jigs, than wire is faster. I use .024  copper wire. You can find different colors at Michaels or Jo-Anne Fabrics. I use three wraps and tighten with small long nose pliers. Then trim with small side cutters.

Cadman is spot on, using wire is fast and holds silicone and living rubber really well but anything with hait you need thread. I wire tie most of my jigs and spinnerbaits when I tie skirts on but on finesse jigs I use thread because it is easier to use on small jigs. I use floral wire, 24 gauge or 26 gauge, you do have to be care full when twisting as you can twist the wire too tight and cut the material, once you finish the twisting just trim the excess and then fold over the piece of wire left sticking up.

I use 22-26 gauge floral wire from any craft store. I shop at Micheal's often. Which is also a great place to meet chicks. You're welcome.
