Should I Throw Smaller Lures In Ponds

Featured Replies

Hey everyone I need some help...The title basically explains it but Should i go smaller with everything in ponds or keep it the same as i would the lake?

Also how big of a Jig and WHAT KIND OF JIG AND TRAILERS would you throw in a 1-2 acre pond with muddy water

I am new to jig fishing and am trying to find the best size and style to learn on

Keep the same.  I fish a similar size pond and no matter what I threw they choked down!  lol  Of course this pond has zero fishing pressure most of the time.  I had dinks taking a 3.5inch vibra king tube.  As far as jigs go, I'd try a 1/4oz first the go up from there.

When it comes to fishing a jig and learning how, check out BassResource's video's.  They are very informative even if you know the technique. They do an excellent job!

I throw the same things in ponds I throw in lakes. I determine what i'm going to throw based on water temp & clarity.

As for your jig question,  i go smaller (1/4 oz) the colder the water. The rest of the year I throw 3/8 to 1/2 oz. If the water is muddy I throw 1/2 oz with a Rage Craw trailer. The larger the profile, the more water it displaces to help the bass find it. Since you are new to jigs, start with 3/8 or 1/2 oz. Those will be your best options for versatility. As for colors, Black & Blue and a Green Pumpkin Craw will cover most situations.

Hope this helps!

Same fish, same lures. LM esp appreciate a mouthful.

On some ponds with lots of small fish I may down-size purely for fun. I've also up-sized on ponds with the potential for big fish, throwing 13" worms and musky-sized plugs, and broken a few pond PB's.

Definitely not. A 3# bass is a 3# bass, it doesn't know how large the body of water is.

This may mean nothing more than I stink at lake fishing, but of my dozen or so largest bass all but one were from ponds of 25 acres or smaller. My personal best is from a 6-acre pond.

same lures should work at dusk, dawn, night fishing, pre-spawn and fall.  follow that lead ie if they work well in 'peak times' but you can't buy a bite mid-afternoon or all summer...down size.

For muddy brown water I like a black jig w/ a black trailer.  Maybe a black spinnerbait.
