Abu Cardinal Sx40 Vs. Pflueger Trion 4740

Featured Replies

They both are pretty similar to one another, and I found them both for only like a $1 difference, looking to get into using spinning reels lol

I dont have experience with either one so I figured some of yall might have some input to your choice/preference and maybe even if youve had experience with them, and some recommendations?

Thanks!

-Mike

I dont think there will be much diffference, but With those two I would probably go with the Trion because it has so many really good reviews on basspro.com.  I would consider going a little smaller possibly. What do you plan on throwing? If I were getting a Trion, I would get the 3.5 over the 4.  A big spinning reel will wear you out pretty quick.

I've got a both a trion and an older entry level cardinal, don't use them anymore but both are still very smooth, I do have a shakepsere agility (my grandsons) and it's as smooth as the other 2.  The noticeable difference between these reels and ones slightly more expensive is the refinement of the drag.  As mentioned I think a smaller sized reel would be more appropriate.

As mentioned above I might go a size or two smaller. I currently have a trion and had a cardinal (only reason it's out of commission is I tinkered with it) honestly I'd say go with whatever one feels better to you. I might have to give the nod to the pflueger for its drag though.

so if i go with the smaller size will i have to get different size line? i have powerpro 14lbs braid, will that still be compatible with the smaller one?

i have a cardinal and a trion. i like both. if i had to choose, i would probably go with the trion. and get whatever size you like. its true the smaller one will weigh less and not wear you out as much casting though. but if you want the bigger one, get the big one.

have yall had much experience with an okuma avenger "a" series? those seem to have pretty good reviews?

I have several Trions from 40 down to 20 they are great reels and the only one I have found that I like better is the Plueger President a few more $ than the Trions but I think they are worth it. I think the President is smoother and cast further. The one down side is that it doesn't come with the spare spool which the Trions have.

I use my 30's & 20's much more that I do my 40, I mainly use it when fishing for the bottom feeders like cats, drum, or gar to heavy to be throwing all day it will flat wear you out. But then again you are a few years younger then me so it might not bother you.

If you have a Bass Pro or Caberia's near you I would suggest you go there an handle the different sizes and judge for yourself.
