Bed Fishing Baits And Techniques

Featured Replies

Well, the bass are finally on beds here in northern VA as well as a lot of other places I'm sure, and I wanted to see how all of you guys are targeting bedding fish.

My three most effective methods have been:

1. Texas rigged soft plastic (chartreuse or white small craw)- 3/16 oz bullet weight, 3/0 EWG

2. Wacky Rig- small 5" finesse worm or baitfish imitator

3. Dropshot- baitfish imitator

Anyone have any tips or lures they like for bed fishing?

I have been having good luck with the 6" Straight tail Roboworm rigged on a 3/16 oz shakeyhead.  The Aarons Magic, and Margarita Mutilator colors both have worked well.

I have sized down a lot in such situations. I've been using a small craw on a wide-bend hook with 1/16 weight. Not sure why this is working, but have had more success this year with this approach than any other.

So far this year I've been doing really well with White craw baits from a few different manufacturers, and the drop shot with a white finesse worm.  Totally shocked by the drop shot since I've never caught a fish on it otherwise, but it's giving me confidence in it now.  Also following those up with a wacky rigged Senko or Trick Stick.

On my T-rigged baits I've been using a red tungsten 3/8oz weight pegged.  Rod, reel, line have depended on where I'm fishing.  Drop shot set up 7'3" Ethos ML spinning rod Shakespeare reel 12lb Spider Wire Stealth with 8-10 Fluoro leader.  Wacky rig either 6'10" or 7' MH Ethos BPS Carbon Lite with 30lb Stealth IKE approved VMC wacky hook.
