Worm/Creature Bait/Senko Hook styles and sizes?

Featured Replies

What size hooks are most of you pairing up with avergae 6" Zoom Utail worms, as well as things like Baby Brush Hogs, 5" Senkos, etc..  Also, what types of hooks are you using?  Extra wide gap hooks, standard gap, etc??  Any steadfast rules when selecting a hook size for a given length bait?

I use a 2/0 or 3/0 EWG gammy with the zoom u-tail.

Thickness of the plastic lure should be first consideration when selecting hooks not the length of the plastic lure.

The 6" U-tail worms is thin and a 3/0 straight shank hook would be my choice; Baby Brush Hogs are thin and short so a 2/0 straight shank hook would be my choice.

The Senko type lures pose its own set of problems when it comes to selecting hooks, the lure is short and thick. Many anglers use the EWG hook, the bend of the EWG hangs below the Senko acting as a rudder. This allows an up and down undulation of nose/tail plus a little side to side motion. I prefer offset round bend hooks which hugs the lure body allowing the Senko to have more of its action and less rudder like effect.

I also find that this body hugging offered by the straight shank and offset hooks allows your lure to come more cleanly through vegeation.
