Featured Replies

I bought some suffix 832 30 lbs test to put on my quantum smoke bait caster. 1st time on the lake it cast like a charm, i even trolled around the lake to get the "green off my line" that day it was amazing. fast forward to yesterday. birds nest, birds nest, birds nest, and birds nest.  i ended up putting reel down for the day can u tell me what can i do ? or what do i need to do???

thanks !!

Casting into the wind perhaps? Change baits? Change the reel brakes? Unless the line was not laying tight on the spool like it was when it was first spooled I am not sure what to tell ya.

How many fish did you catch? How tight is your drag, and how's your hook set?

^^^ what he said. Braid catches wind very easy also 30lb has a fairly small diameter which doesn't help. Maybe after all of those backlashed casts you should let a lot of line out and get it neatly organized on the reel.

As kickerfish said, it could also just be standard problems with not having the reel breaks tuned in correctly.

I never had a problem with any braid causing backlash. But day to day conditions in general and different lures may require brakes and spool tension adjustment, not really any different than running mono like others have said. I do think Suffix is one of the best braids you can use, and as said 30 lbs. is light on a baitcaster.

well i did check the brakes! l  i didnt cast into the wind!  thats the problem i cant figure it out? does line conditioner help?  ty for the advice!

Did you use some type of backing when spooling up?

well i bought some 50lb test we will see how that works . I thought of 2 things after i posted.  1) backlash only happened after it was out 40-50 yards. 2) and also i wen to check the brake and it was on 5 not  8 . 8 is what i normaly have it on when casting "long range" . also i had the first 50/60 set with 12lb p line polycarbon . im thinking that may have something to do with it.

anyway thank you for the help!!!!

Make sure you spool it on tight. When you were trolling it is possible the line spooled back onto the reel with some slop. 832 will dig into itself if the line is pulled off the spool with a super tight drag. If it does not get noticed it can reach nightmare status. The only braided line I've used that won't dig no matter how hard I try is Samurai and PB in lighter tests. Just be extra cautious and you should be fine.

Did you catch any fish? If so, it iss probably just your drag. Braid has zero stretch, so when you set the hook it has to go somewhere and it digs in the reel if 1.drag is too tight and 2. Smaller diameter braids. I lock down the drag with 50+ and havent had any issues, but i use 30 alot of my rods and i have to be on top of my drag settings because if is too tight, all will be well until you set the set the first time, then you have have backlash after backlash. Until you get it out.
