Which Would You Use?

Featured Replies

I recently picked up a 6'6" M/F Vendetta rod and have been using it for Texas rigging 7.5" worms and craws. I have now acquired a 7' MH/F Daiwa Jupiter. Of the two, which would you use for spinnerbaits and which would you use for Texas rigs? I have a 7' MH Veritas I use for larger worms, Carolina rigs, and jigs outside of cover. Just wondered which one you would use for what and possibly a brief explanation why. I love knowledge!

I would use that Veritas for all plastics/jigs, and use the Jupiter for spinner baits, and maybe that Vendetta for lipless/mid diving cranks. The Veritas is very stiff for a MH, so jigs and tx rigs work pretty well on that. I'm assuming the Jupiter is more of a true MH so you could pretty throw whatever you wanted on that rod. The Vendetta being a medium and being an Abu rod, is a little stiffer than rated as well, but IMO would be a perfect lipless crank bait rod/square bill/mid depth rod. My advice would be to experiment and see what YOU like the feel of the best.

The Veritas is just too stiff for lighter plastics IMO. I know I'm overthinking the whole thing. Comes down to the fact I love the Vendetta and rarely throw spinnerbaits. Everything you read says MH for worms. I just don't want to lose fish on account of having an underpowered rod simply because I like how it fishes better. Maybe I should have asked "can I feel confident worm fishing with a 6'6" M rod?" I HAVE already caught a #3 and a #4 on that set up in the last two weeks...guess I just answered my own question!

I would use the Vendetta for spinnerbaits, while a good rod for the money the Vendetta tends to lack a litte in sensitivity making it a good choice for reaction type baits. The length of the Vendetta also lends itself to spinnerbaits around cover and docks with the shorter length generally helping with casting accuracy.  I have no experience with the Jupiter.  The Veritas can handle the duty of plastics and lighter jigs, it is more sensitive than the Vendetta making it a better choice for contact baits  and has a little extra length that would help with pitching and flipping if necessary.

IMHO a 7ft MH/F rod is the most versatile of all rods, you have 2 of these and should be able to cover most other techniques without a problem.  The one area that I don't see covered as well as the others is a good moderate or moderate fast rod for crankbaits.

Ive done alot of worm fishing with a medium rod. I don't think I've lost many fish because of it. Some of my bestfish have came on a 6'10" medium

That's what I thought...but I sure do like that Vendetta! My total line-up is as follows:

Alabama Rig and swimbaits: 7'10" H/XF BPS Extreme / 5500C3

Jigs and large plastics: 7' MH/F Veritas / Orra SX

Deep Cranking:  7'8" Rick Clunn Deep Cranking rod (M/M?) / Daiwa Exceler in 4.7:1

Shallow Cranks and lipless: 7' Rick Clunn clearwater squarebill rod (MH/M?) / Quantum Kinetic PT

Topwater:  6'6" M/? Daiwa Jupiter / Black Max 2

Spinnerbaits: ProMax2       7' MH Daiwa Jupiter OR 6'6" Vendetta ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Worms and small plastics:  Quantum Kinetic PT   7' MH Daiwa Jupiter OR 6'6" Vendetta ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I fight the urge often to go into debt to feed my passion! But one day...ONE DAY, money will not play as big a role as it does now and I won't have to figure out what I need to do to optimize what I have. Until then, I appreciate everyone's understanding and input!

I love fishing, and I love reading about fishing, but one thing I have learned is that sometimes what the Pro's recommend might not be a good fit for me.   Many people can give you the text book answer to your question, and support that with lots of great reasons why it should work, but sometimes it just don't.   Use what makes you happy, and is comfortable to you, there are no hardset rules about what rod or reel to use for what.    I think you have a great selection of rods and reels, and you should be able to handle most any technique with what you have, use what feels good to you and don't worry about what is suppose to be right or better.    Fishing is supppose to be fun, not weighted down with heavy questions and wondering how you will be able to afford that new rod or reel.

I use a 6/6 m/f Abu for all my worm fishing and a mh/f for my jigs and spinnerbaits. It's all in the set up and how you fish it or use it when you have a fish on. I think the pros go up one because there are money on the line.
