Water temperatures in the upper 40s; despite popular belief these are excellent cold water lures.

How much water above the grass before you bump up to 3/4oz.

This is not a deciding factor since ripping grass is but one technique for rattle baits. By holding your rod tip up and you can accomplish the same depth with each lure.

90% of the time I throw a 1/2 oz leaving 10% to the 3/4 oz., why? because that's what is most productive on the bodies of water I fish.

I use the 1/2 oz almost all the time.  I've got some 1/4 and 3/4 oz baits, but I haven't gotten them wet this year and I don't think I got the quarter ounce ones wet last year at all.  The last time I threw the 3/4 ounce ones were because I wanted more distance.
