South Shore Massachusetts

Featured Replies

Hey guys and gals,

I live in the Dedham area and I'm looking for some good spots to fish for some big'uns! Spent the past two days at Houghton's Pond in Milton and I've been running into a lot of trouble trying to catch anything. Hitting a chain pickerel this morning and experiencing a long battle with a turtle around 7 p.m. with nothing in between has got me a little down low. Ran plastic senko (t-rigged) and a swim bait most of the day but switched to various other things (rat-l-trap, top water frog, popper) and had no results. Perhaps it's the way I present the bait? I don't know. If anybody has tips as to how to fish Houghton's Pond and/or other places to fish along the South Shore, that'd be great!

Cheers!

-Sean

Try the Blue Hills reservoir a little further up Chickatawbut road.  Keep going through the Blue Hills towards Granite St in Braintree.  You can't miss it.  It used to be a stand alone reservoir that the State rebuilt with lots of our money, but stocked the pond when they finished their project.  Took a 2+ lb largemouth out of there in May.

Good luck with it.

Come up to the north shore... plenty of ponds with big boys up here

Just an update since my last post here: pulled a 4+ and 5+ pound LMB out of this reservoir over the last two weeks.  One on a brown metallic and the other a blue metallic Texas rigged worms.

I fished there twice this year and although it was right after ice out, I had no luck. Granted my days fishing have been limited, I'll have to try the res again, I go by it every day after work. Were you fishing off the point or the shoreline adjacent to where you park?

Houghton's pond has been good for the hour and a half  - two hours I can get there. Clark617, if you fish during the day, hit the south side of the pond, it's has a lot of shade for our green friends. Dawn and dusk you'll have better luck on the north side. I have basically ruled out the west side and east can be good if the lily pad field is abundant. Last year they over managed the pond and killed all the weeds. I've noticed that they are coming back and so have the fish. If you like topwater, then you're at the right place.

I just hit Houghtons on Saturday night @ 730PM-9PM and didn't get a bite. The pond seems a little out fished. I saw a few guys there with buckets taking anything home they caught.  We worked Senkos (texas and wacky) to ending the night with jitterbugs.

I started on the grassy shore near the rock shore closest to the underground tanks where I catch 2+ pound bass. I've since moved closer to the gate where water is let into the underground tanks. There's a drop off about 25' off shore. That's where I caught my 4 & 5 pound bass.

I grew up in Quincy and never caught bass that large from shore.

Good luck there.
