Help With Topwater

Featured Replies

I have no clue which bait to buy for topwater. Currently the only lure I have is a jitterbug. What are some other good options for topwater?

Thanks

My all time favorite topwater lures are a zara spook, black Cavitron buzzbait and the Spro Bronzeye frog.

For "walk the dog" action: Lucky Craft Sammy & Zara Spook

For a straight retrieve by reeling: Rage Tail Shad, Stanley Ribbet Frogs,  buzzbaits, & my favorite...Spro BBZ 4" shad (floater).

For grass mats or heavy vegetation: Hollow body frogs (I use Live Target frogs)

Hope this helps!

- Hula Popper

- Topwater Frog

- Spook

- Buzzbait

I'm a big fan of Stanley Ribbits b/c they chatter on top water like a buzz bait, plus you can walk em like regular frog. Any popper is a good start IMO. I'll tell you what though, the top water bite is off where I'm at right now. I mean O-F-F...OFF!

Ya i just got into topwater also, especially the heddon torpedo. I would definitely recommend one.

I forgot about these little things.  I actually have one that I havent used in years.  I need to go find it actually!

You will need options for open and weedy water. Buzzbaits are semi-weedless and frogs, both hollow bodied and solid, are weedless.

For open water, in addition to your Jitterbug, consider walking lures, poppers and prop baits.

The Strike King Sexy Dawgs are super easy to "walk the dog" too.  Rebel Pop'Rs work great too...

Double prop buzzbaits, rage Shad (love that thing), Sammy, pop-r, hollow belly frog.

Mister twister top prop

Spooks

torpedo's

Floating crankbaits twitched on topwater.

Floating crankbaits reeled very slow over submerged weeds.

Spinnerbaits reeled with the rod tip up so the blade slaps the water as it moves.

Jitter bugs

plastic worms rigged with no weight.

My all time favorite topwater lures are a zara spook, black Cavitron buzzbait and the Spro Bronzeye frog.

x2 i prefer the bronzeye popper to the original tho but I've got a lot of confidence in the cavitron black buzzzbait and the quality of the fish are often better

For walking lures don't overlook the rebel jumpin minnow. I personally find that it casts farther and is easier to walk than the spook. Bone and black/silver are the two colors that are the most versatile.

There are also plastic options for top water, horny toads, rage toads, vibe worms are effective weed less buzz type baits.

Wake baits like the bandit footloose, norman fat boy, ima roumba

Prop baits are cool and fun like the lucky craft Kelly J, splash tail or smithwick devil horse.

Another vote for spooks - specifically the Super Spook Jr. Small enough to get lots of bites but still coax out some fatties. I like a split ring on mine to help it swing on the walk.

Lots of good advice. I had a free ten bucks at Dicks so i picked up a cavitron buzz bait, heddon super spook jr, strike king sexy dawg and an arbogast hula popper. Heading out tomorrow morning with my nephew so I will see how these work. Which set up works best with top water. I have a 7'6" vendetta mh with bpq 7.1 and 65 lb pp. A 7' m vendetta with a revo s with 12 lb yozuri hybrid. A 6'9" mh veritas with revo sx and 12 lb yozuri hybrid. A 6'8" mh cumara with a chronarch 50e with 10 lb spiderwire flouro, or a 6'6" m quantum with a daiwa strikeforce reel with 10lb mono.

The Rebel Pop R is hard to beat. Koppers Live Targer Soft frog is great also. If you want a constant action bait Zoom Horny Toads are more fun than a barrel of dead monkeys.

I like to use mono, especially with the hula popper, spook and dog you picked up. when they hit it gives a little stretch and doesn't rip the out of their mouth like a stiffer line. It also stays on top of the water better.
