I posted a drop shot thread the other day, but cant find it right now, due to the fact that Im at work and on my phone right now.

I tried the rig the other day and had some success, but watched a video last night and he was talking about using heavier tackle. Line, sinker, hook, etc.

I wanna try this, and am curious if anyone else does it. Do you set the hook the same as if worm fishing? Does it yield good results?

You're referring to the "Bubba Shot" or heavy drop shot.  Something you can use to pitch/flip in and around brush/cover etc.

 

With that you use heavier line (I use 10-15lb FC), at least a 1/4oz weight and a short leader around 6-9 inches.  Rig your favorite bait weedless and have fun.

 

When you set the hook with this you use a more traditional overhand hookset because of the thicker hook.  If you use a thin wire hook you can get away with a reel set.

Can you throw that "bubba shot" into open water? Im limited to bank fishing. I have a local lake that I fish from time to time but theres not a whole bunch of cover to cast around.

You wouldn't need a bubba shot for open water.  You can get away with a traditional drop shot.  If you are fishing from the bank then I will share with you my setup.  Gene also covered this as the setup for replacing a carolina rig.

 

8-10lb test

1/0 EWG hook (or #1 split shot/drop shot hook)

1/8 - 3/16 weight

 

the length between the hook and the weight is much longer.  I go with around 12 inches or more.

 

You need to think of the angle in which you are dragging it.  The farther out the bait the closer to the ground it is.  YOu need the long leader to get it up off the ground more from the bank.

 

Also ... keep the tip high.  That helps a ton!

Thanks man. Like i said, i had some luck with my first drop shot expirience but it was nothing to brag about. I had it on 14# mono with a 3/16oz weight. Size 1 DS hook. Are drop shots even capable of producing good bass? Especially the with the small hooks?

Didn't know they made such a thing.  I have a Camaro with a 6.3 L for 425 HP.  I had no idea that had one 2 litres bigger!

 

I am looking for a 1 ton truck to pull a horse trailer.  But I think I need a diesel.

Def. get a diesel. I love my truck, but if I could go back I would just pay a little more and went with a diesel. I get less than 8mpg.
