I just opened up my spinnerbait organizer, for the first time in forever and a lot of my hooks are really rusty. Are there any disadvantages to this? Also, can I fix em, and prevent future rust?

Fine sandpaper or steel wool can remove some rust. Keep them dry in the box or dip them in a bit of wd-40 before you put them away. You can clean them before you use them if you're concerned about fish health

Yea, Im an animal person. I try to handle the fish as best I can when I catch/release one. Ill try the steel wool. Iv heard drilling holes in my organizer helps to prevent rust. True?

If they can dry out that's better, but at the same time in high humidity it could cause rust. A sealed box and dry hooks is about all you can really do. I don't use wd-40 and practice the best fish handling I can as well.

Once the coating is gone they will rust again when they get wet. Maybe someone else here will know of a good safe protective material

I put tons of hardbaits and hooks away wet and I have never had anything rust since I started using them.

To fix your rusted hooks rub them with sandpaper.

go to your local pharmacy and ask them to save you the desicant packs that come in large bulk bottles of pills. after a week or two go pick them up. keep collecting till you have enough then tell them. put those in your boxes in every compartment. free and its the same as paid products.

Cheap method to prevent rust : cut the tips off of cotton swabs (q-tips) and place one in each tray or every other. Has worked well, the small amount of moisture will adhere to the cotton before the metal. Also, when you're out fishing, try to let you lures air dry before you put them away or when you get home leave your boxes open over night if you can.
