Jig Advise

Featured Replies

I need to pick up some jigs for the deeper water fish, what would you suggest?  Here in NY, the lake I fish has a thermocline at 15-17 feet.  The bass are hanging out at 15' and just under it.  The water is very clear, and with a surface temperature of 80 degrees.

Ive not really jigged for bass before, so Im open to all suggestions.

Thank you,

kb

For water that shallow I use 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs.  If you have grass you may want heavier.  Get some basic colors (brown, black/blue, green pumpkin).

depending on fall rate, 3/16-1/2oz jig. i like natural colors for clear water.

id try a 3/8oz arkie or football jighead with a 5" yamamoto double tail hula grub in green pumpkin or watermelon.

How would you fish them?  Cast and retrieve or jig under the boat?

unless youre targeting an isolated piece of structure or suspended fish on your electronics directly under the boat, id cast it out a ways.

let it fall vertically and wait as long as you can stand (10-60 secs). hop, drag and pause it occasionally all the way back to the boat. i fish a t-rig similarly with a few more hops.

you will feel a series of quick taps or the bait will feel heavy. the bait may start moving by itself (watch the line). set the hook if youre unsure if you hit a log or if a bass sucked it up.

there are many ways to fish jigs, thats how i fish them when not targeting visible cover.

I forgot to mention that the lake has a high population of sawbellies.
