Lure Weight

Featured Replies

I'm confused; how much of a diference would a jig that weighs 1/16 differ from presentation to a 3/8? What all is affected: fall rate, what else? I don't understand how much of a difference it could make to a fish.

You can't just look at weight, you need to consider profile as well.  These two jigs are both the same weight, but the jig on the right has a bigger profile, and a slower fall rate.

Also consider head shape.  The jig on the right works well on gravel, worked along the bottom.  The jig on the left punches through weeds better.

Some more...

Big profiles

Compact profiles:

Its the fall rate plus the size of the jig thats different. We need to adjust our presentation between the two different weights too. Hopping a 3/8 jig when compared to a 1/16 is way different.  You need less force to move the 1/16oz jig.

Remember in clear water its smaller natural colored baits fished faster and in stained water its larger sized brighter colored baits fished slower.

Just be changing the trailer, you can totally alter the action and fall rate.

I have creature baits and other trailers for my jigs. However, I just bought some rage tail craws and baby craws. However, I think the only jigs I have are 3/8 weedless football jigs.

I'm very excited about the rage tails. Just not sure if I have the right jig for presentation purposes.

Rage Craws and footballs are like peanut butter and jelly in the rocks.

I fish a rocky point from shore and i tried a 3/8oz football green pumpkin jig with an FLW green trailer.  On my very first cast i hooked up a bass.  My point is we can work the rocky points from shore too.

Great point Bigbill.  A big fishing error I see from guys new to boating is to fish EXACTLY like they fish from shore, but at a right angle to their shore spots from water.  Many of my better fish have come from working deep to shallow, just out of reach of where a shore fisherman can work the prime structure.

Exactly what J Francho said ;)

Many of my better fish have come from working deep to shallow,

I work baits uphill as often as I can. Bring them into the structure (ambush points) that big bass use to pin their prey. If I can't work the bait uphill I try to parallel the structure.

When fishing deep water structure I always position my boat shallow and cast deep, your lure stays in contact with the bottom longer.

Are you guys saying to sometimes fish from a boat as if you were on the shore; just position the boat further from the shoreline, as if the shore were extended out, fishing deep to shallow?

  • Super User

No I'm not, when fishing a shore line you have no choice but to fish "down" hill.

I'm talking offshore structure  ;)

I guess I'm referring more to the 1st ledge past the weedlines that is prevalent in our northern, natural lakes.  But yes, if bank beating, then you have to work from shallow to deep.  Though I generally prefer to parallel the bank, at a slight angle, than cast perpendicular to it.

Is that because you're in the 'strike zone' longer?

Is that because you're in the 'strike zone' longer?

Yep. And not to be disagreeable but I use a football head through thick grass and lilys with no problems at all....

No problem with that, I've hammered in a more than a few nails with a socket wrench.

Just curious, do you see any advantage to using the footballs?
