I always see stuff relating to duck hunting, and would love to try it. I think ducks are beautiful animals. After killing your ducks, can you make anything out of the feathers? What do you guys do with your ducks besides eating them?

There are tons of flies that you can tie with their feathers. Or if you are not into that, you can dry the feathers out and use the body feathers to stuff a pillow. 

We don't do anything with our duck feathers, but goose feathers can be saved to stuff a pillow or something else.  But, you have to kill A LOT of geese to get enough down to do anything with.  We just cut the breasts out and toss the carcasses in a buddy's fox pen.

Thanks guys. Like I said, Id like to try it but I dont know how to prepare or cook any kind of duck. I dont have the right to kill anything Im not gonna have a good use for. Maybe I could find some ideas.

Ducks are good eating and I'm sure if you can find a flyshop or someone who ties in their spare time they'd be more than willing to take the feathers off your hands, maybe trade you some flies for the feathers.

You can make stew out of the breast. Good eating for winter months. I like to grill them with bacon wrapped around them. I also add seasons such as garlic salt and cajun rub. You could get creative with marinating in Italian dressing or whatever sauce you would use for traditional meat. Before you cook, I would examine the meat for any small feathers, pellets, etc.

Duck is great!  I cooked some on the grill last night, and just ate some leftover for lunch.  We typically butterfly the breasts, stuff them with cream cheese and jalapeno peppers, wrap them in bacon, and then grill them until the bacon is crisp.

Soak the breast fillets in a mixture of teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, and red wine overnight and then grill to medium rare. They will be great. Serve with sauteed green peppers and onion. Works equally well on duck and goose. Just be sure to not take it past medium rare or it will be like you are eating a boot. 

 

As for the feathers, do not sell them or trade for goods! It is illegal in almost every state under the federal migratory bird act. You can give them away, but you cannot sell them. That goes for any part of waterfowl, not just the feathers. 

Well, like I said before Iv never hunted ducks. Do you have to call the ducks in? Id like to get a call, but dont know what kind to get.

Asking a duck hunter what call you should buy is like asking a bass fisherman what lure you should buy.  Answer: ALL OF THEM!!!  The best way to learn how to duck hunt is go with a duck hunter.  It's like bass fishing, as there are a million ways to do it.  We kill some over decoys, some come in to the call(s), most are attracted to a combination of decoys and calls, and a few unfortunate ducks just happen to fly by the wrong place at the wrong time each season.
