Old Okuma Spinning Reel Problem

Featured Replies

I have had this okuma reel around 5 years and it just recently started having issues. After a few casts the line gets so twisted up that i find its getting knots if i don't let it spin out every 3 or 4 casts. I am guessing it has to do with the line roller on the bail. I unscrewed the piece and took out the roller thing and put some oil in there, but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

Forgot to mention: I have not been closing the bail by turning the handle, I close it manually. Also, I spooled the line properly when i first put line on it. When i say "spin out", I mean cut the lure off, troll the line behind the boat and reel up again.

What reel is it? It could just be one of those models that aren't any good.

I have had it 5-6 years. It is a good model, just worn.

I didn't mean to say it that way. I meant how some models wear faster than others on certain parts. My spinning reel did this and I just cleaned it, and it works a lot better. You've got me curious now. Is it a trio? Nemesis? Epixior? Safina?

Check the line guide roller buy running a toothpick over it lightly to see it rolls easily. It won't hurt to check the bail wire to make sure it's clean and smooth as the line rides over it. Are you using a new bait style that's prone to cause twist? Has the line been changed recently?

It happens with all different types of baits. The line has been changed about 5 months ago and its 8lb berkeley tri-lene xl.

5yrs. time to send it in for service!

The Line roller bearing is the only thing that comes to mind that would cause your problem if you have done as you said, 1) the line is in great shape, 2) you are not reeling as the as the drag is slipping, 3) the lures ou are using are not spinning the line during your retrieve or 4) the bail and roller aren't damaged. There could be a bad "bearing or bushing" depending on what your roller rides on, there could also be a shim missing or other parts that support the bearing from the roller housing. If it is a good reel, like .RM. said, worth having serviced!!!

I'll bet it's the line. Feel the line for roughness. I find in some bodies of water the water can be tough on line. I have no clue why. The only thing I see is oil on the surface of the water after a weekend of boating. I'm thinking it's the two stroke oil that's pooling up.

Man you're killing me. We won't judge what reel it is just tell me. My spinning reel set up was a pflueger echelon combo that I paid $25 for when it was on clearance at Academy.

I don't mind if people judge what reel it is. It is a okuma stratus xts 40. Shoulda told you guys the name yesterday, but couldn't find it.. I remembered today that it was in my kayak cause I took it off my reel after kayak fishing and just left it in the kayak. Sorry bout that. Not sure how this info would help solve the problem though...

I would politely disagree... This reel has been a pain to deal with. The bail doesn't flip back nicely and i have to flip it, then place it in the right spot so it spools the line correctly. It is pretty smooth on the retrieve though. I would prefer the shimano's that i have had the chance to use in the past.

Maybe it's just your reel. I love those trios. Notice I said that they make awesome spinning reels, although shimano makes some really freaking awesome spinning reels.
