Went out today with some great intel from a forum brother. `Showed up at about 1230 and found peas cruisng around the shallow areas. Got one on a lipless crank and then nothing for two hours. I throw a topwater hard bait, lipless crank, super fluke, spinner, frog...nothing. Had the peas slap the fluke but not crush it so no hookup, same with the topwater. Bite seemed to dry up completely around 2.

So....Did it get too hot for them? It had to be 90 today and the shallow area was about 2 feet deep. Would you have tried something different? I picked up a top water popper and a rapala husky jerk HS-10 on advice from the forum member and I might try again tomorrow morning.

Keep at it. That's all you can do. Follow the advice you were given. Move around, and cover a lot of water. Pea's can become skittish like bass. They have been around long enough to distinguish baits. If something does not seem right they will dismiss it. Move around, and you will find a fish that willing to accept your offering.

The husky jerk is good but you should also get some x-raps, they love fast erratic action, just zip it along and they will crush it.

Small or large x-raps?

I like the small ones, been using silver/black and white.

Man I wish I had that problem! There aren't any Peacock bass up here in Jacksonville

Peacocks prefer smaller lures rather than the bigger size. All white or black and orange are my 2 favorite x rap colors down south.  try a small buck tail jig, they'll hit that to. 

I have been successful catching peacocks on gold spoons, spinnerbaits, in line spinners, a variety of hard jerkbaits, crappie and bucktail jigs and top water lures.

Use some live bait also. Small cichlids and shiners when they aren't biting lures. I annoy the heck out of them with small jigs I buy from Walmart. The jigs are small enough to be inhaled easily.

Rapala Skitter Prop has put 40 or more good peacocks up to 7# in my boat in the last three trips. Don't ignore the top water bite.

Pro Traps with the little willow leaf blade, if you can still get them.

I tried to fish around here in south Florida today too.. I'm not an expert on Peacocks but I think peacocks will bite when it's sunny. Any tips from you or any of the other guys on where to fish from the bank around here. I live around the fontainebleau area.

Purple X raps worked like a crazy mad man, upgrade the hooks to 2x and you get a repeated Peacock catcher. 

 

Pop-Rs, Devil's horse also worked frantically is about as much as excitement you can get if they are hitting them. Ditto for lipless jerks, the protraps as mentioned before work well.

 

I use to fish the Miami Ski Club lakes just about everyday years ago and it was absolutely addictive when the bite was on.

I'm so jealous that y'all get to fish peacocks all the time! We're headed to FL in March for a peacock trip and I'll have to remember this post for tips! Of course catching one in the Amazon is at the very top of my bucket list, I'm sure I'm not the only one !!!

my fav bait is the sinking yo-zuri pins minnow i think its called and i cast it out and jerk it hard reel slack jerk hard reel slack nonstop fast...if you jerk it fast its hard for them to not want to smash it lol
