Spinning Rod Balance?

Featured Replies

Does anyone check your rod balance on your spinning rod setup? There was a kit with a screw and flatwashers to adjust the rod balance to the reel we were using. I been wondering if we could use a larger heavier reel than we should be using this would put the balance of the whole setup off kilter. I'm not sure if anyone checks this today or not. I was just wondering this because I installed a 20 series spinning reel on a rod I usually put a 30 series reel on. I check the balance of the setup by putting my finger horizontally in front of the reel on the handle to see where the rod setup balances. I'm thinking when the rod is out of balance the reel end is heavier. It makes handling the rod with one hand harder to do. This would be tuning the rod setup. I know this was done years ago and I think that BPS still offers a weight kit for it. BigBill

Do a search for a "fishing rod balance kit" then click on wikihow on how to balance your fishing rod and which baits we use that our rod setup should be balanced.

Like to keep the balance on my spinning rigs slightly tip heavy for more accurate casting.

On my ultra lites I keep balance at neutral...

Yes I balance my spinning setup and I actually balance it butt-heavy to compensate for the weight of lures I will be using.

Center of balance for me is slightly lower than the spinning reel.

Used tungsten weights epoxied on butt-end..

I like my spinning rigs to balance at a point about an inch forward of the reel stem. It becomes slightly tip heavy when a lure is added, but that's OK with me. It seems to make for easier casting that way.

I like to start off with my rod and reel having a comfortable feel.  Using so many different types of lures with a wide range of weights makes balance virtually impossible, it isn't much of a concern to me.

I really start to feel it in my elbows if my gear is too tip heavy. I'd buy all super-light gear if I could, but in the mean time, I've got a single weight attached to my Chronarch (casting) setup to bring the balance right about where the reel is seated.

Don't have any of my spinning rigs (currently) using balancing systems, although I've used them in the past.

So for me, when I'm fishing wacky, TX, etc., I move my tip all the time, so the lighter it is, the better.
