Is it possible to actually wear out fishing rods?

Have you ever worn out a fishing rod?

Can it lose its tention, action and power setting through heavy use?

How often do you replace your fishing rods?

Never, unless it's broken or something obviously wrong with it. I can't answer your questions but I've never noticed anything about wearing out. I've got a Fenwick that's gotten heavy use for 15+ years and a Quantum that's even older and performing just as well.

This is a great question.  I have never worn out a rod because i usually replace them or break them but in theory it is possible.  Any material has a certain number of flexes that it can take before it will fail.  In the case of modern graphite rods I imagine this flex number to be extremely high and would take decades to achieve.  It also won't just break in two all of the sudden but it will tend to flex more as the material breaks down.

One way to think about it is anytime something bends it is essentially rubbing against itself and friction causes heat and breaks down a material.

As far as how often I replace a rod it seems like side i got back into fishing a few years ago i replaced all my rods every year but now after 4 years in I am pretty happy with my set ups and most likely will not replace them anytime soon.

Probably possible to wear them out but it would take a few decades.  The oldest rod I got is a St. Croix Legend that I bought from a friend who got it when he first got on their pro staff back in 1995.  18 years later it is one of my favorite rods and still going strong.  I don't replace rods unless they break.

i dont think so, theres rods for the 70s that still catching fish till this day

Never broke or wore out a rod.  I suppose if you hooked a 150 lb fish on a ml rod it might break, I have hooked and landed 2 150lb lemon shark back to back on a 25lb rod almost doubling in half, rod was just fine, spinning of course, would I use anything else, lol  Although this was in the days of my youth, I was only 63 yo old at the time.  I gave that $50 Penn pursuit to a friend, it still may be going strong, I haven't seen him in years.

I don't know about graphite but I do not think a fiberglass rod will ever wear out. Over at 'Archery Talk', guys in the Traditional Section have talked about leaving old fiberglass backed recurve bows and long bows strung for years with no damage at all. I have a couple of 44 year old Bear recurves and unless they get damaged, I don't see why they can't go another 44 or longer.
