Best Rigs For Two Baitcasters?

Featured Replies

I have 2 rods and one reel. I need to get a second reel.

Currently I am casting a 7'6" Abu Veritas MH with an ABU SX in 6.4:1 with 30-pound braid.

The other rod is a 6'6" Ugly Stick GX2 M.

What other reel should I get and what rod/reel configurations should I go with? I don't want to go above the price of my current reel.

It seems I'm either throwing a top water frog or a Texas rigged Senko and I'm tired of  switching baits.

Eventually I'm going to get a third rig, but for now I just need to figure out what my best second rig should be.

Normally a 6-something ratio is a good all-around reel.  I assume you don't want to spend a lot of money.  There are plenty of threads about $100 and less reels.  The Pro Qualifier is always mentioned.  The Mettle sold by Academy Sports is well liked by some.  Used is always a good option.  Look for an older Citica or Curado.  Occasionally you can find an STX at the $100 mark.

Be sure to do a search to find many more suggestions.

Lews Speed Spool or Bass Pro Qualifier.  Great Reels $100 bucks.

Thanks for the input! What do you think the 6.5 would be best for? And what kind of line? Same for the 7.5.

I'm thinking the 7.5 would be good for frogs and top water and the 6.5 for worms and craws.

My Abu rods are not Veritas, but I hear the same thing about the whole Abu line.  Rods are heavier than listed.  I can definitely tell you my 2 Abu rods are stiffer than any of my other rods of the same rating.  So frogs..yes,  topwater...no.  Too much power for treble hooks, especially with braid.  I would also use this rod for worms and craws.  I use 7' MHF rods with 40# braid all the time for fishing slop in Florida using 10" unweighted worms.  They work just fine.

I've never owned an Ugly Stik.  I can't find any reference to its action.  I would think the action would be fairly soft given how they like to show the tips bent double.  This would make it a better rod for topwater and any treble hook presentation.  I would use a mono for topwater and crankbaits.  My normal weight line for Medium rods is 8# mono, but given where you live, I would probably spool up with a 12# mono or copolymer.
