Well, I Now Have The Fishfinder; How Do I Fish Deep?

Featured Replies

what do I have to look for? I only have a dsi unit from lowrance. how do i fish the deep stuff, heavy texas rigs ? drop shots carolina rigs or what?

to me the hardest part of fishing deep its that at some point It feels like the bait is directly under me like a pendulum and not exactly on bottom. I also feel that Im fishing too fast...

what tricks do you guys have, how(very important) do I position the boat so that I can attack the structure better?

Im thinking that a kinda heavy shakey head may be a good option as I can get it really far with spinning and 7# fluoro...

Ive found deep humps in the 30(top) range going down into 50 feet. rockpiles that go from 0-30 feet. A lot of bare flat areas in the 60 foot range. A lot of points(how do I tell a good one from a bad one.  a couple old river channels.

this post is a mess, just a collective of thoughts on my weakness I need help making this way of fishing a method.

When fishing deep the key is structure, even better is look for a spot on a spot, for example look for a rockpile on a point. If you're fishing deep and feel like your lure is coming back to you then you should try letting line out until you feel slack and know you're on bottom, also if you can't reach bottom then try a heavier weight. You can fish it many different ways. A few examples are some you stated like dropshot, shakey, carolina, and texas rigs. Other techniques you can try are spoons, jigs and I've even seen people drop weightless senkos down to 40+ feet (it just takes a while). Sorry if this is a bad response but this was what I could make sense of in the question Lol

If you have a map or chart, start with that, look for places where shallow water drop off, if you have something with stairs or levels, even better, now strap the rod down tight on the deck, and ride around going from shallow to deep and back, say 8 feet to 30 or 40 feet or so (your mileage may vary), waypoint or bouy spots where you see fish. Oh, and straight up and down is usually one of the best ways to catch them if they are deep. Silver buddy, jigging spoon, drop shot, or a plain jighead with a worm or grub, all work. Of course a heavy jig, spinnerbait, or crankbait will work if they are off the bottom some. You are are in PR, recruit some of the salt guys, its second nature to them, or better yet go fishing in the ocean.

I'll try to answer this without being confusing....

What do I look for? - Well, it's going to be hard for you to find structure without side-imaging. To find structure on DSI, you'll have to roll right over it, so imagine you're on a 75,000 acre lake and seeing a picture of only 20-30feet right below your boat - you will literally be looking for a needle in a haystack.

That being said - what you want to look for are ditches, humps, current moving over those ditches or humps, brush piles, fallen trees, rocks... ANYTHING that isn't just flat bottom. You'll need to REALLY learn your electronics to be successful doing this. One thing I've started to rely a lot on is sonar instead of DSI... sonar gives me a MUCH better picture of the bottom than DSI.

How do you fish it? Lots of ways. Vertically with a drop shot or jigging spoon. On of my personal favorites is a Flutter spoon. Carolina rig. Football head jig. Heavy weighted swim baits. Deep crank baits.

Tricks I have? - Not really any TRICKS per say, but I did buy a couple marker buoys awhile back and use them anytime I'm fishing deep. If I'm fishing a ditch or hump, I will mark each end of the hump/ditch with a buoy, then troll the length of the hump/ditch and fish the entire thing.

The best trick I can give you has been the hardest one for me to learn - LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY USE YOUR ELECTRONICS!!!! I really can't stress it enough. It's aggravating to learn..BOY is it aggravating!!! But it has paid off HUGE in better fish, better fishing spots, and saved time.
