shoes/boots for fishing in heavy rain

Featured Replies

I am looking for some suggestions on footwear for heavy rain conditions. The past few years I went through several pairs of LL Bean Boots. I had a problem with the boots leaking through the stitching between the rubber bottoms and leather tops. Also, I prefer boots I can lace up, not slip-ons. Rubber bottoms are fine. Thanks in advance.

Bank or boat?  Bank fishing, I like a pair of knee high rubber boots.  In a boat, they don't have to be so heavy duty, they just need to stop water.   As a matter of fact, heavy duty just makes me a little more clumsy in the boat, which isn't a good thing.   I found a pair of relatively thin stretchy rubber boots that work fine.  They roll up into a gallon zip lock bag and hide in a corner underneath the console until I need them.  I think I paid around $20 at the Orschlen Farm & Home store.

Gortex lined boots of your choice. My personal favorite brand are irish setters.

The LL Bean duck boots/shoes work great IF you treat the threads and leather with Sno Seal.

Most of the production models are for looks, not functionality. That way you can LOOK like an outdoorsman and never leave your living room, LOL.

I mostly fish out of my canoe. In a heavy rain I will often be standing in an or two of water (I stand in my canoe). My gore boots are Meindl Perfekt Hikers from Cabelas. I like to use rubber bottom boots for heavier rain. My gore pants cover the leather uppers on most of my boots.

I never heard of Sno-Seal. I will give it a try. Thank you all for your comments.

If I fish in the rain, I take my shoes and socks off, no joke.

Feet are designed the way they are for a reason, to grip what's below them, not just because they look cool.

But when in snow when even being barefoot and  is slippery, I have a pair of my dad's old redwings that I drilled some very small studs into. Never even slipped on wet metal. Mainly though because of the sheer cold. Other wise, i'd be bare foot  8-)
