using soft plastics! help

Featured Replies

all u bait caster fisher man help! im new to baitcasters and i have a question. it seems when ever i use a plastic my[ch65279] line doesnt rap around the reel very tight, which makes the line easer to dig into the spool because baitcasting reels have a horizontal spool, this never happens when im using a rapala or a spinner because there is always resistance on the line when retrieving so it stays nice and tight. help!!

My suggestion is to switch to a spinning setup when using plastics.

Baitcasters aren't the best at casting light plastics.

If you insist on using the reel for plastics, you should keep your thumb on the spool to increase tension.

Have you "balanced" your rod/reel/line and bait?

Check each rod's specifications and match the line test and bait size.

Always keep line tight when reeling in your bait.

Here is a simple way to balance your baitcaster:

Rig it as you are getting to make your first cast.

Tighten drag.

Tighten spool tension knob.

Point rod tip to 11 o'clock and release baitcaster spool.

Your goal is to have the bait drop to the floor (not carpet) so that the spool stops when the bait hits the floor.

Fine tune the drop and casting distance after a few casts.

Also set your "brakes" or "magnets" in an "X" pattern for starters before you set up the rod.

Keep rod tip up when reeling in to keep line tight if possible.

Always run line through your fingers to get it snug to the spool when reeling in.

Just some suggestions to consider.  :)

even when using spinning gear , you will have to pick up slack line that can cause wind knots. also , using your thumb for tension can make the line spool on one side of the spool more than the other. best thing to do imo , is when the line is loose on the spool is to make a long cast and reel it in with the line between your fingers in front of the reel.

also what sam suggested.  :)

Ditto on the spinning gear. I use a MH spinning rod and 20# braid for all soft plastics.

I throw plastics on baitcasters all the time and never have this problem. What are you throwing? Also maybe tightening up your spool tension knob would help.

I was thinking the same thing as mman16. 95% of the time I am using baitcasters, and 95% of that time, is with plastics, and have no problem. The only time I reach for the spinning setup, is when I am throwing real light plastics, or skipping under stuff.

Are you talking about when you are say using a worm and you pull the rod tip up and then reel back down with say a slack line.  The line that is winding back on the spool is loose when going back on the spool?  Therefore being easier to dig on a hookset after a couple fish.  If it's bad sometimes after a couple cast you might just throw it out and reel straight back in to get it tight on the spool.  or maybe use your fingers in front of the reel to keep the line tight as it spools back on.  If this isnt it then just disregard ;D
