Avoiding spoilers...  you can't have a show if they stay somewhat secure in one place and get stale secondary caracters.  Gotta keep moving to new places and meet new, interesting people.  It was inevitable.

There is no proof that Judith is actually dead.  She could have still made it on the bus.  It was a big topic on the Talking Dead show.

I agree, though I also believe there is no way possible it would be more beneficial to take a baby out of a carrier when retreating.
