Problems with Mann's Little George

Featured Replies

This summer I attempted some vertical jigging with a Mann's Little George and I was frustrated when the line would become entangled in the treble hook or, sometimes, the rear spinner.  I started with braid but thinking it was the extra limp line which was causing it, switched to mono.  This didn't help much.  I tried to keep contact with the bait so there wouldn't be a lot of slack line but that didn't help much either.  What am I doing wrong?

Vertical jigging.

The Little George was designed to be a 'yo-yo' bait. Cast it out, let it sink, then "pump" it back to you using your rod and then reel.

My description may have been a little off.  What you described is basically what I attempted.  Still, I was experiencing trouble.  It was on the downward "yo" where I seemed to be getting into trouble.

Sounds like it should be working for ya then. I don't let mine fall on a slack line like jig or worm fishing. I keep taut line contact with the lure at all times.

As stated earlier , you are not  fishing it in the way it was intended..

Try a little stiffer mono or fluoro or a leader of such, it should keep it out of the trebles.  Also, don't go completely slack on the downward Yo, follow the bait down.

I think I was dropping it too quickly.  I'll try slowing it down.  I'll try heavier mono too.  Thanks.

This is way off topic, but every time I see something about a Little George I think of this story...

I was at a Bassmaster U and Woo Daves was talking about them and said the most brilliant lure design ever was the Little George....a slab of lead with a treble hook....made Tom Mann rich!!!

This is the key, lift (don't jerk) the lure up and keep the line tight on the drop.

Farmpond... Like you I've had considerable trouble fishing the Little George and currently find I prefer to leave them home.  I find a 5/8 oz Silver buddy to be a more trouble free option to deep hump bass fishing.
