Drop shotting flukes

Anyone have any luck drop shotting 5" flukes on 3/0 EWG hooks?  I've never drop shotted anything that big.

I've actually fished two flukes on a drop shot rig (one hook about 1 ft from the weight and another hook about 3 ft. from the weight.)  I have had some success with it around floating docks.  I've even drop shotted with 6" Zoom Brush Hogs with some success.  It is just a great technique.

Yes, but using a 1/0 wide gap or a 1/0 drop shot, nose hooked.  Caught a couple of 5 and 6 lbs'ers, a few 3's, etc...  Had it about 2.5'-3' up from the weight which makes casting with a bc challenging; doable but challenging.

havnt had luck with that but i do dropshot 6in roboworms alot.

Not so much with flukes, but I've had quite a bit of success with 5"senko imitations like a dinger or the Chompers salty sinker or the Gulp sinking minnow.   One day a 6" red shad sluggo was the ticket.  One several other days, the Bass Pro Sticko worked the best.  The main consideration was a bait that wasn't quite as fragile as a senko.

I experimented with different hooks quite a bit.  The 4/0 Gamakatsu skip gap got the most play over the last month and a half for me.  20 lb Segar invisix and 1/2 ounce drop shot weights.  Bait was 6" to 8" above the weight.  Never more than a foot.

Another good bait was the 4" Berkley Crazy Legs Chigger Craw.  That seemed to match up better with a 3/0 hook.

I plan on trying them texposed rigged, like I would if I was fishing them weightless.

No, but if you nose hook them on a 1/0 drop shot hook you'll have a better hookup ratio.

x2......

Nose hooked ZOOM Swimming Fluke (Paddletail) in Smokin' Shad has done well for me, and the LFT Live Magic Shad.  I have also had good luck with both of those on a weighted EWG, cast out, and let it sink to the bottom and sit for a few seconds before pulling it off.

I would do this only if I were fishing it in cover.

Hookups is my concern. Secondary concern is weedlessness. I will be fishing near, cover, but don't anticipate dropping it in real heavy stuff. I'll try the nose-hook option first. If I start hanging up, I'll rig it texposed style.

If I nose rig it, should I use something other than a EWG hook?

The smaller the better - 1/0 drop shot hook, however the gaps vary on them and I prefer a 1/0 with a wider than standard circle (the differences are very minor, however). You can also use a 1/0 EWG which is quite small for an EWG hook.

For nose hooking, try an octopus or circle hook.  I generally stick with a 1/0 or 2/0.  If I am using a large fluke or fluke type bait, I will go up to a 3/0.

I've got a bunch of Gamakatsu 3/0 Finesse Wide Gaps but the shanks seem very short for drop shotting, shorter even that drop shot hook shanks.  The Gammy 3/0 Wide Gap Finesse (WGF) hook is almost exactly the same width as the EWG but, obviosly, with a shorter shank.

So, 3/0 WGF or 1/0 EWG?  Here they are compared to the fluke I'll be using...

I'd go with the 1/0 but even that looks on the big side.  I probably wouldn't use the 3/0 at all - too big for nose hooking, too small for t-rigging (a 5" Fluke) if you are going to throw it into cover.

I'm going to try the 3/0 Finesse Wide Gap in the picture.  It is almost exactly the same size as the 1/0 EWG in the same picture, except for a shorter shank.
