Converting Google Earth Waypoints

Featured Replies

I am trying to plug in some public domain waypoints into my Eagle Fish Elite  502c.  I am having difficulty converting lat/long data from the Google Earth-based readings to the presentation format on my Eagle unit.  If the published lat/long reading is:  38° 04' 27.24” and 92° 34' 35.68”, what would the conversion be in the following format:  38° _ _ . _ _ _ '  and 92° _ _ . _ _ _ ' ?  Does this format have a common name?  How is the conversion calculated?  Any assistance would be appreciated.  Thanks!!

My guess would be that you Google GPS is giving you those positions in degrees, minutes and seconds of latitude and longitude. The Eagle unit may want the in degrees, minutes and THE DECIMAL EQUIVELENT OF MINUTES.

Easy fix. Divide the seconds by 60 for the conversion. Example 27.24" divided by 60 equals .45

So the corrected latitude would be 38-04.45'N

Hope this helps,

Todd

Let the internet do it for you.

OR, you can set Google Earth to the format you want to use:

Select Tools, then Options, on the left side under Show Lat/Long you can select which format matches your GPS unit and enter those co-ordinates directly.

Very Cool.

Thanks

I've used that tool Wayne linked to.  Works great.
